Despite rapid urbanisation, land-based livelihoods continue to shape socio-economic realities<\/strong>, particularly in rural areas where traditional tenure systems influence access and control<\/strong>. The chapter highlights that Africa\u2019s urban growth differs fundamentally from historical European industrialisation; it is driven by population expansion, rural economic decline, and land scarcity<\/strong> rather than formal job creation. Consequently, rural economies remain vital<\/strong>, underscoring the ongoing need for equitable land access<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Land is more than just a physical asset; it embodies economic, social, and political significance<\/strong>. However, land remains a deeply contested resource<\/strong>, fraught with disputes at multiple levels\u2014neighbouring families, generational claims, pastoralists versus farmers, and broader national conflicts. Africa\u2019s legal pluralism<\/strong>, a fusion of precolonial, colonial, and postcolonial systems, complicates governance, fostering ambiguity and elite-driven land exploitation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
